Agreed, “game drivers” is a bit vague. There were (and maybe still are) games that install some memory resident app (–> driver) which works as a means of copy protection. Some adventure game I bought years ago had this.

And you’re right: Why uninstall games when you’ve got TB drives these days! Unless you work with a WD Raptor or even SSDs (and aren’t rich enough to buy them by the dozen).

Pollution of the app environment… hm I don’t install and uninstall 20 games every month ^^
And what are the remains? The savegames?

And yah performance isn’t really an issue, but my PC is 2 1/2 years old which means it would need a replacement since several months.

I guess, that time has passed. While I certainly would want to deactivate local Oracle and Apache, nowadays RAM / CPU configurations allow being a bit more lenient about maxing out the OS configuration for gaming.

Now if only some good (PC) games were out there …

Looks like you are really afraid of loosing your Windows installation. ^_^ No offense.

I really don’t see a need for a second partition with the same OS. Didn’t have any problems so far and if the system goes nuts: bad luck. But W7 looks really stable so far, I would be way more afraid with Win XP, didn’t really work for me, was always buggy. Should work fine now with SP3 but never used it with SP3 on my mainsys.

Disk gets defragged and the registry cleaned every now and then, so no problem on that side.
As for autostart apps: I’m usually deactivating everything that’s unecessary. Besides messengers, mail, tweetdeck and other essential background services.
Drivers are updated asap anyway, and no problems usually, a Nvidia graphics card comes in handy. Maybe it’s different now but ATIs driver package was/ (is?) always a little bit chunky.

Performance wise it wouldn’t make such abig difference. Yes, I can’t play games with the highest AA settings nowadays (–> need an upgrade–> no money–> orz) but the ressources are still enough, sort of.
Isn’t rebooting just because you would like to play a game a little bit time consuming?

I notice that you have one single setup for games and applications on your Win7 box. Isn’t that a bit “untidy” (in lack of better words)?

Example: Some games install weird “drivers” (read: copy protection) and leave crap upon uninstallation. On the other hand, applications hook themselves in autostart, create services that are enabled upon system startup and so on.
To max out gaming performance, I naively assume, a Win7 installation solely dedicated to games would be the best option.
Little risk of damaging the important productive system (read: browsing the net for … philosophical reading). No effin’ apple/adobe/ auto-updater bugging you. High frequency of driver update (nvidia, of course) does not harm the application environment.
