Need more space…
As you can see in the screenshot above: I really need some space now! If I download ~4 more movies my external WD My Book 1TB drive which I’m filling since a few months is full ^_^
But I’m not sure which HDD I should get ORZ
The candidates are:
Western Digital WD1001FALS 1 TB (Caviar Black)
-
Hard Disk Size: 1 TB
-
Interface: SATA-300
-
Hard Disk Rotational Speed: 7200
-
Buffer Size: 32 MB
-
Price: ~100€
VS
Western Digital My Book Home Edition 1 TB
While the internal HDD has great transfer rates the external one is quite convenient for carrying around an sharing stuff.
Which one would you choose?

nice, I myself would chose Western Digital WD1001FALS 1 TB (Caviar Black) for it’s price and the fact that I like my memory inside the computer instead of external. I might have to buy something like this myself soon, backing everything up on DVD-Rs takes ages now. I got about 100 GB left, I’m in need of backing things up again :X
Well, since my Mediaserver’s running smoothly, I don’t have any space problems anymore
. So I would take the WD1001FALS. One HDD more for my Server ^^. Since I have about 3 External HDDs I don’t need another one. But if you alot on the road the other one would fit better ^^.
i don’t really have a use for carrying around an external drive from place to place, so i’d go internal… but this is about you, not me ^^;; as long as you’re using esata i think it just boils down to whether or not you want to pay ~35€ for the external drive’s portability.
If you have the space, internal all the way. All I have at home is a laptop and 2 external drives (one is a portable that gets all its power via USB and the other is a normal external). It’s kind of a mess. Plus the internal just has better performance. Have you felt the need for a portable drive or is it just one of those hmmm…might be nice to have sort of things?
What? Really….? Your 1 TB Internal is almost full? The desktop i bought in late 2007 has an internal HD with a total of 177 GB. Today i have 51.7 GB of space left. You must save all types of good things in your HD to fill in 1 TB. Astonishing.
Then again i only save Anime torrents, and anime i actually enjoyed.
I can’t make a conclusive decision since i plan to get an external HD myself as well. But i’m not going with anything close to 1 TB of space. I need another 300-400 GB. x]
I’m online with s*cking mobil internet at the camp so I’ll keep things short.
I will get the internal drive!
@super rats:
Yah, to be honest there isn’t really a need for portability.
@Kurisu:
Auf alle Fälle ne WD!
Ich habe mehrere davon und bin zufrieden. Laut??
@loli1983:
The increasing space needs are caused by HD anime and movies, software suites like the Adobe Mastere Collection, game isos and so on.
51.7 GB free? That means you are able to save ~5 more 1080p movies xD
I choose Asa senpai! Bah. Sollte mir lieber mal ne richtig grosse kaufen. Eine mit 500 TB. Oder so.
@Melonpan:
I’m a PC..
Why do you insist on a WD?
Samsungs are much easier on the wallet and still high-quality.
I got fed up with HD space issues some time ago and just bought 8 1TB drives and a RAID controller.
Works like a charm. Just don’t use WinXP 32-Bit when you do that.
Being limited to 1TB would make my head explode.
Warum schreib ich eigentlich auf Deutsch?
Guckst du hier: http://geizhals.at/a260889.html
Bin allerdings Deutscher. <.<
@Halconnen:
But i’m afraid of those F1 series HDs. They are quiet well known for going-nuts after a few weeks. Win Xp x86? DO NOT WANT! THX anyway.
Have 8 F1 spinpoints in here. They’ve been working like a charm ever since I bought them several months ago. No failure yet. WDs are loud in comparison.
And I said NOT to use XP x86. Me do not want either.
If you want to make sure that the disks are alright, test them for a couple of days by filling them completely with arbitrary data. This stress would also expose thermal problems. Most of the time, disks fail soon after purchase – as you wrote yourself – or never.
Also I’d never listen to bashing of HDD vendors or models because you can find such slender for virtually every single of them. It’s just when people loose data, they’ll be extremely pissed of and become unreasonable. Millions of satisfied users won’t comment at all or even know what kind of HDD they have in the first place. In reality, HDD failure is almost always PEBKAC or thermal issues.
Good to know that Halconnen agrees with me about WD loudness. You might not realize it until you’ve used something else.
@Kirisu:
Just take a look at some forums. Problems with the Samsung F1 1TB appear far too often for my taste. Of course every drive can crash but I don’t want to worry about my data that much.
Yah WD’s are slightly louder if they are stressed, but hey they work! Don’t you prefer to use brands which have worked fine for you in the past?
Indeed. The Samsungs are silent enough that I only hear them when they spin up. Unless some odd vibration problem of the case pops up that I didn’t quite yet find the source of.
And that’s what the RAID configuration is for. RAID 5 and you won’t lose any data. And if they fail in the first few years, it’s a warranty problem, so you won’t even have to pay for the replacement drive. =/
@Halconnen:
I would prefer to have a Raid 5 file server too, but who buys that for me?
Just imagine how it is to survive a month with 300€ in Europe…
I need a new hdd too^^”
But, I think I buy a Samsung F1 with 1tb. I have two 500gb hdds from Samsung and absolutly no problems.
I know, at the beginning there were many problems with the F1 but now I think and hope xD it is better.
But the 1,5tb hdd from Seagate would be nice too^^
I will need a new HD soon, too
but i will wait some time…
my problem is: the biggest part of my Pc is…crap..
low-class x1800 gto, IP4 with 3.06…this stuff..
if i buy an internal with 1TB it will just say goodbye and i won’t get nothing runnig smoothly…
same with an external, though…
but cause ogf my upcoming oneyear abscence from my homebase its useless to upgrade now…so i will have to get along with my old HD >.<
@jimmpantsu:
Who doesn’t need a new harddrive? xD
@JefLebowski:
Oh, theres really need for an upgrade. Why are you one year absent from home?
theres never enought of hdds ^^;
I have laptop so internal hdd is a nono for me. Thus I ended up with externals… oh I rember when i got 1st one 500GB and thought that I will never fill it -_-
currently:
5x 1TB WD My Book Essential 2.0
2x 500GB WD My Book Premium
1x 500GB WD My Passport Studio Turbo
so far HDDs proved to be good. only one of Premiums (2 year old) starts to act strange. dunno if its cuz its old or I damaged it with some mass transfers when getting new ones -_- basicly after transfer of alot of data hdd drops speed and eventualy I loose all comunication with it. only way to see data on it again is to reset it. also it gets a bit hot -_-
what I like on externals aside of portability, is that I can plug them only when I need them. Thus bit prolonging their lifespan I think. Why have hdd start up each time i turn on the machine. And unpluging sata or power in case would be a bother ^^;
If you are always on the go, the external would be the best choice, otherwise, the internal is just as nice
. You can never have too much space ^^;;. I just recently build another PC for storage only. 6×1 TB HDDs running raid 6 so net space is 4TB and I probably fill it up less than 1 year >.>
