Important note for those with chibi bandwidths: This entry contains 110 Full-HD screen caps!

Finally got a subbed 1080p version of Ghost in the Shell 2.0.

GITS 2.0 is a renewal version of the original movie from 1995. In my opinion the beginning of the most interesting universe in Anime history. All the animation was re-produced with latest technologies such as 3D-CGI.

Ze hikky pulled an all-nighter and watched the original movie and after that the renewal version aka GITS 2.0;

(The first picture is always the original version while the second one is the 2.0 screen cap.)

The most noticeable change are the new interfaces. While they were held quite simple in the original movie they are now really detailed with precise lines.

snapshot20081228114419

snapshot20081228114426

Another quiet obvious change is that all choppers in 2.0 are CGI modelled now.

    The whole first scene where the Major is sitting on a rooftop is now a CGI scene too.

Batou and Togusa exchanged their surveillance truck with an CGI heli ^_^

Looks a little bit strange in V2.0 at the point were the style switches back to none-CGI scenes.

snapshot20081228123513

snapshot20081228123518

At this point you will recognize that Kenji Kawai remixed the music with 6.1 Channel Surround and Randy Thom of Skywalker Sound joined as Sound Designer to improve the sound. The gunfire for example sounds more realistic now.

snapshot20081228123656

snapshot20081228123701

CGI ftw?

After this the famous “making of a cyborg” song with the fitting scene starts. Lot’s of CGI work here too.

A notable thing in 2.0 is that it has a light warm, yellow touch, while the original movie had the typical technical cold, green touch like NGE.

These scene looked already great, only the lightning has been a little bit improved.

And here comes the FAIL! scene of 2.0 in my opinion:

They re-did this with an CGI scene too! WTF? Although I love great CGIs… in this scene they should have used the original material. Cause in one moment you watch Motoko as a 3D model…

snapshot20081228132058

snapshot20081228132102

…and just a few seconds later she crawls out of the water back in original style. If you ask me they should have just improved the water and lighting/shadow quality like in this last comparison pic. Nicu water get btw!

snapshot20081228132209

Angry Motoko is angry. Would you like to be replaced with an 3D-CGI model? DO NOT WANT!

Feels really nostalgic. I still remember that I was completely taken in by the following scenes many moons ago when I watched this movie for he first time.

All voices were re-recorded for 2.0. Notably, the voice actor of the Puppet Master was changed from Iemasa Kayumi to Yoshiko Sakakibara. The  Puppet Master has got a female voice and they even address “him” as “her” now… ährm (ーー;)

Love that scene were Batou explains that this new body from the black market is not his taste.

THE END

I have to say that most of the improvements are ok for me, but I ‘m not completely satisfied (diving scene… ORZ).

I guess Production I.G.reached their goal, because after watching GITS 2.0 you don’t have the feeling as if you would have seen an Anime from the mid-nineties. Maybe they wanted to adjust the look a little bit so that it fits the GITS 2 – Innocence look a little bit more.

    Hmm…I somehow prefer the old Version.Sure it has more fancy effects but i prefer the colour saturation of the old one alot more.I dont think i would cash out money for the 2.0 Version

    Finally got a subbed 1080p version of Ghost in the Shell 2.0.

    Hat mich irgendwie gewundert, dass nicht alle RAWs den Sub dabei hatten. Ist ja bei der Jap DVD/BR schon mit dabei.

    Zum Film selbst, man sieht schon deutlich die Aufwertung in Richtung GitS 2 Innocence.

    Aber im vergleich von Rebuild of Evangelion 1.01 und Ghost in the Shell 2.0 find ich die Eva Neuauflage besser. Liegt evlt. an den teilweisen “harten” übergang zwischen komplett 3D CGI zu 2D bei GitS 2.0.

    @Blowfish:
    Problem discussed @ ICQ ;)

    @jimmpantsu:
    Ja, das mit den subs wunderte mich auch.
    Tja Eva 1.01 macht mehr her. Bei GITS 2.0 war’s eigentlich nur “Feintuning”, dabei hätte es auch bleiben sollen. Die CGI Helikopter sind ja ganz nett aber eine CGI Motoko ist eindeutig zuviel des Guten.

  4. December 28th, 2008 at 22:56 | #4

    The lol. Das ist ein schlechter Witz oder? Wie kann man einen guten Film nur dermassen mit hässlichen neuen CGI-Effekten und anderweitigen Farbexperimenten jenseits von Böse und Gut vergewaltigen? DO NOT WANT!

  5. December 28th, 2008 at 23:14 | #5

    @Melonpan:
    Spielen wir heute CGI-Gegner dieser Welt vereinigt euch? ^_^

    Naja, ich hab meine Meinung schon dargelegt, abgesehn von einer CGI MOOOOTOOOKOOOOO kann man(n) es ertragen.

    I need to find this version, although some of the new scenes aren’t really that great looking it does seem like this will be an interesting take on the original.

    I prefer the original. I want to see a GITS movie fully based on the manga style of animation. “Man Machine Interface” would be an awesome movie to animate in cg, I’d buy that! In GITS 2.0 all they did was make a couple helicopters CG, and a couple other scenes cg…not a reason for me to buy it. Its a great anime. Whats wrong with it the way it is? Its almost an insult to the original animators. What this tells me is, I guess theirs no need for paper and ink animation any longer, just hire a computer wizard. Ugggh.

    Wow.. Thanks for the comparisons.

    This is a seminal film and making any changes is always going to cause a stir. Still waiting for the UK release, but it will be nice to have this in HD, though I would have preferred the original and the Renewal in the same package.
